#38: The Question of Family

Sophie asked whether Helen wanted her to stop visiting.
Helen said no.
Their relationship had been real long before the birth certificate fell onto the floor. The lie mattered, but it did not erase every good year.
Helen could not decide exactly what Sophie was to her.
She was not Helen’s daughter, yet she was the daughter of the man Helen had loved.
She was also the young tenant Helen had fed, helped and watched grow into an adult.
That connection was its own kind of family.
