Jackson Theron was adopted by Charlize Theron in 2012, making the Oscar-winning actress a mother for the first time. Theron later adopted a second daughter, August, in 2015. She has described adoption as something she always wanted, and she has raised both children largely as a single parent outside constant public exposure.

Charlize publicly discussed Jackson’s gender identity in 2019, saying Jackson had told her at age three, “I’m not a boy.” Theron explained that she had two daughters and that her role was to protect them and let them be who they were. Since then, Jackson has remained mostly private.
