#20: Gloria Vanderbilt’s Gay Son Anderson
Anderson Cooper was born on June 3, 1967, in New York City to heiress, artist, and fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt and writer Wyatt Emory Cooper. His childhood connected him to the famous Vanderbilt family, but it was also marked by loss, including his father’s death when Anderson was 10 and his brother Carter’s death in 1988.

For years, Anderson kept his private life separate from his public work as a journalist. In 2012, he publicly came out as gay in an email published by Andrew Sullivan, explaining that he had become concerned his silence might seem like shame. He wrote that he was happy, comfortable, and proud of who he was.
