Mary Cheney was born on March 14, 1969, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney. As her father moved through major government roles, Mary grew up inside a prominent Republican political family. She later worked in politics herself, including on the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign in 2004.

Mary has been with Heather Poe since 1992, and her sexuality became a recurring public subject during her father’s vice presidency. In 2006, she discussed what it was like to come out as gay to her parents while promoting her memoir. She and Heather married in 2012 and have two children.
