Char Simpson was born in 1990 to actress Sigourney Weaver and theater director Jim Simpson. As the only child of a major film star, Char was raised mostly outside the tabloid spotlight, while their parents kept family life relatively private. They later appeared with Weaver at occasional public events.

Char’s gender identity became publicly known through reporting and red-carpet coverage that used they/them pronouns and described them as nonbinary.
