Will Portman is the son of former U.S. Senator Rob Portman and Jane Portman. He grew up in a Republican political family in Ohio while his father served in Congress, the George W. Bush administration, and later the Senate. Will later attended Yale, where he became involved in campus life and writing.

Will came out as gay to his parents in 2011, while he was in college. Rob Portman later said the conversation changed his view on same-sex marriage. In 2013, the senator publicly announced that he now supported marriage equality, explaining in an op-ed that his son’s coming out had deeply affected him.
