#40: Guarding Toys or Stolen Objects
Some dogs become defensive around toys, bones, socks, or stolen objects and may freeze, growl, stare, or snap when approached. This behavior, called resource guarding, can happen because the dog fears losing something valuable. Trying to grab the item directly can quickly trigger a bite.

Avoid pulling objects from the dog’s mouth or confronting them aggressively. Stay calm and use trades instead, offering a treat or another toy to encourage the dog to release the item willingly. Children should never try to take objects away. Repeated guarding behavior should be addressed with professional guidance.
