#9: World War I, 1914–1918
“Out of the north shall come fire and smoke, bringing great death and ruin upon the fields of battle.” Many people see this as Nostradamus’s description of the first modern global war, which brought devastation on a scale never seen before.

When World War I broke out in 1914, Europe was engulfed in trench warfare, poison gas, and machine guns. Millions of soldiers perished on battlefields across France, Belgium, and beyond. The combination of fire, smoke, and destruction matched the imagery in Nostradamus’s quatrain, convincing some that he had foreseen the Great War.
