#18: The Great Fire of New York, 1835
“The sky will burn, the city will be inflamed, towers and temples consumed, and the cry will be great.” Many believe this verse describes the catastrophic fire that struck New York City in 1835.

In December of that year, a blaze started in Manhattan’s financial district during a brutal winter. Strong winds spread the fire quickly, destroying more than 600 buildings. The devastation was so great that the city’s financial institutions temporarily relocated. Nostradamus’s vision of a city in flames has been linked to this dramatic event in New York’s history.
