#19: The Fall of the Soviet Union, 1991
“The great empire shall be divided, and no longer united. A weak ruler will break its strength, and many small kingdoms will rise from its ruins.” Many see this as Nostradamus predicting the collapse of the USSR.

In 1991, after decades of Cold War tension and internal unrest, the Soviet Union officially dissolved. Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms weakened central control, and 15 independent republics emerged from the once-mighty empire. Nostradamus’s imagery of a divided great empire fits neatly with the breakup of the Soviet Union into smaller nations.
