#29: Peter Falk Refused to Let Columbo Change His Look
Peter Falk was adamant that Columbo should never be cleaned up or modernized. No new wardrobe, no sharper suit, no upgrades. The rumpled raincoat, scuffed shoes, and messy hair were non-negotiable parts of the character.
Falk believed Columbo’s power came from being underestimated. If he looked sharper or more polished, the illusion would break. Keeping Columbo visually frozen in time helped preserve the detective’s disarming presence — a man who looked harmless, outdated, and always one step ahead.
