The Facts of Life began as a backdoor spin-off from Diff’rent Strokes, but it wasn’t originally planned as a long-term series. The Eastland School storyline, featuring Mrs. Garrett and a group of girls, was introduced simply to expand Diff’rent Strokes’ world.

Audience response changed everything. Viewers connected with the girls and the boarding school setting, prompting NBC to greenlight a separate show. What started as a one-off experiment quickly evolved into a standalone series with its own identity, tone, and long-running success.
