#26: She Creates Free to Be… You and Me with Dionne in Mind in 1972
In 1972, she created Free to Be… You and Me, a children’s book and album inspired partly by her young niece Dionne. The project promoted individuality, gender equality, emotional honesty, and the idea that children should not be limited by narrow expectations.

It was a major shift from sitcom fame into children’s media and activism. Instead of playing one independent woman on television, she began creating work that encouraged young audiences to think differently about identity, fairness, and possibility.
