The States Americans Are Choosing to Leave and The Places They’re Moving to Instead

Connecticut faces a crisis as soaring taxes and the cost of housing drive residents away. A recent United Van Lines study paints a grim picture, with 60% of residents leaving in 2021 while only 40% moved in. Retirement serves as a significant motivator for a third of those departing, aggravated by the state’s taxation of all retirement income, including Social Security.

High property taxes compound the financial pressure, prompting many to consider more tax-friendly, warmer destinations. The harsh winter also plays a role, with long, cold, and snowy seasons pushing some residents, like David Dill, to seek refuge in sunnier climes.
