#5: They May Not Get to Say Goodbye
Entering witness protection can happen so quickly that there is no final dinner, phone call, or emotional farewell. A witness may have to disappear before anyone outside the program knows what is happening, even when close relatives are left confused and frightened by the sudden silence.

John Franzese Jr. said he was not allowed to tell his wife or mother that he was leaving. His mother began calling relatives because she could not find him. To protect his location, he had to let the people closest to him believe he had simply vanished.
